“let's see what we can work out” alone is a strong indicator of a scam. Legitimate clients never communicate that way.

It does sound a lot like something it happened to me about two months ago. It was a scam and I reported it to the authorities. Unfortunately there's not much they can do. I did not lose any money over it, but it was a loss of my precious time. Not to mention how nerve wrecking that situation was.

You should never give them your routing number, or any bank information! Besides, if they send you a check, there's no guarantee that check has sufficient funds. Paypal and Venmo are money transfer apps and I think they are in the safer side. That doesn't mean that scammers won't try trick you. If you go to paypal.com, you'll see a list of scam types in their help center.
Remember: if a is too good to be true... It probably is... At least that's what helped me realize that the person who contacted me was up to no good.
