Problems with variants Apr 30, 2018

This sounds good.

But there are problems with language variants.

How can you search for target language variant when it's still not possible to define target variants in the profile? Or does this search presume that the target variant is the same as the variant set under Languages in the profile?

I tried a search at https://www.proz.com/find for DA-EN(British). I don't s

I tried a search at https://www.proz.com/find for DA-EN(British). I don't show up at all. But I noticed that under Languages in my profile, there are options for "UK" as well as "British". Why are there two options for the same variant? And does choosing "UK" mean that searches for "British" won't match? Probably not, as including both does not solve the problem.

There is also something odd about the circle showing the number of filters. When I clear the filters and choose a source language, 1 filter is shown. Then I add a target language, and the counter jumps to 3.

Danish has disappeared as target language Apr 30, 2018

After testing DA-EN, I cleared the filter and tried searching for EN-DA. After choosing EN, I looked for DA in the list of target languages, but it's nowhere to be seen (neither in the short list at the top nor in the long alphabetical list).

It looks as if the Clear function does not work properly. It may appear as if all filters are cleared, but internally it seems to remember that DA had been chosen as source and that it should therefore be excluded from the target list.

This could be related to the apparent filter counting bug.

Filter counting bug also affects Expertise Apr 30, 2018

I chose "IT" as expertise, and now it shows 2 expertise filters.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the feedback!

Correct, you can enter your language variants in the Languages section of the profile updater.

Thanks for reporting this. This was a bug that should now be fixed.

As per your suggestion in the CPN thread, I removed having both "UK" and "British" target language variant options in the search. However, ProZ.com still supports both in the profile.

Searching "British" matches both users who chose "UK" and those who chose "British".

This is meant to be a feature, not a bug. As the defaults for language pair emphasis and field of expertise emphasis are different from the old directory, these are both highlighted to draw your attention to them. Thus, when you choose the target language, language pair emphasis (the 3rd filter) is also highlighted. Same with when you choose a field of expertise, 'Field emphasis' is also highlighted (the 2nd expertise filter).

Hi Katalin,

The features exclusively available to members are not completely set in stone yet, but will most likely include those listed below (and possibly others). Please also note that as this service is targeted toward outsourcers and agencies there will be features that are not available to Professional members, only Business members.

- Batch contact options
- CPN, SecurePRO, and Pre-screened filters
- Deep content matches
- Ability to adjust search weightings
- Ability to adjust the results per page
- Ability to change the default sorting of results
- Real-time chat
- Data from ProZ.com Pools
- Client feedback giver names (visible when hovering over the number of positive reviews or ratings)

Thank you for the answer, Kevin.

What about full names?

Till yesterday the Proz Find didn't show full names.
A directory without full names is useless, and many new visitors will think it's a trap and they will leave the site.

And will we freelancers see the full features?

As a colleague mentioned before in another thread there are cases when translators want to create a team or when they want to recommend somebody if they are not available, or if they don't work in that field for example and want to help for the client to find a translator in that specific field.

It has not been decided yet. One of the larger goals this year (which this release is a first small step) will be to more diligently monitor and manage the "noise" a freelancer receives. Rewarding outsourcers who are more thoughtful, more considerate, more serious, and more precise with their messaging. Making sure outsourcers are registered on ProZ.com is one necessary step in this process. As such, features of non-logged in visitors and non-members will be limited. Having said that, the team will also be carefully studying the usage of ProZ Find to ensure that changes do not result in a decrease in contact opportunities for freelancers.

As I mentioned above, some features will only be available to Business members (and not Professional members). The ProZ.com team understands your need to create teams, find colleagues, etc. which you will still be able to do as a Professional member. The limitations will be to prevent agencies using/abusing the Professional membership.

Searching "British" matches both users who chose "UK" and those who chose "British".

This is rather incoherent, and by leaving two options that mean the same, you leave users in confusion about whether they will be excluded from one if they choose the other, or whether they will be penalised in searches for having more than one varient. You would need to include an explanation about this in the profile. Why include "UK" and "British" for UK English, but only "US" for US English, not also "American"? But it makes no sense to have more than one option for the same thing. It makes it opaque how it works.

Thank you for your honest answer.
I think many great translators who are subscribers are very interested in this information and will decide their subscription based on the next steps.

These kind of leaks will become very expensive under the forthcoming European General Data Protection Regulation.

Giving clients a toggle option to view SecurePROtm members only means that members who don't want to fork out for the Plus package can be filtered from the search results at one fell swoop.

SecurePro switch not working correctly? Or reindexing problem again? May 1, 2018

Last night I did a search so that I was included on the first page of results. I switched the SecurePro switch on on top of the search page, and I promptly disappeared. I tried it this morning, I still don't show up if SecurePro is a criteria. I tried two different language combinations.
I tried logging out, and logging back in, no change.
Is the filter not clearing?
Is there a reindexing issue (like at the previous test run)?
