I-IV / Serious Games I-IV

Das Kreuz und das Silber

Computer games have often been the object of public attention. As a rule, the main focus is on violence and cruelty, how games impact the psyche of adolescents and adults players, that pre conditions not only their perception in everyday life, but also the direction of scientific research. Despite the fact that video games are a mass phenomenon, they still hardly construct a subject for serious work.
In the installation Parallel Farocki attempts to fill this gap and to comprehend the nature of this new type of imagery that for some 30 years has become a leading subject within the context of art history and philosophy. The installation consists of 4 parts, where in each part the artist is drawing on a specific aspect of computer games.
In Parallels I Farocki traces the evolution of representing the living objects in computer games. He juxtaposes them with photographic and film imagery, which until recently dominated Western culture. Both the former and the latter gravitate towards realism, continuing the tradition of European Renaissance, however the ways to achieve it in each case are different. And, if in the film still the leaves on the trees, stirring in the wind, always refer to the actual wind, computer generated wind drives only towards itself, while remaining fully a product of a man made virtual reality.
Parallel II and Parallel III are devoted to boundaries. In the first case Farocki explores boundaries and properties of objects in the computer games space, and in the second – the boundaries of player’s gaze, that fully merges with the gaze of the computer's camera.
Finally, in Parallel IV Farocki investigates behavior of the computer games protagonists. He provokes certain situations and reactions that reveal patterns of behavior, within which the player operates.
Serious Games I-IV

In Serious Games Harun Farocki again turns to one of his central themes - the war. He ventures to the Military Battle Simulation Centre in the closed town of Twentynine Palms in California, where American soldiers are trained for military action in Iraq, as well as to the Military Rehabilitation Centre at Fort Lewis, Washington. The artist indicates what role film and digital visualization plays in the development of psychological techniques used in the modern American army.
First two parts of Serious Games are dedicated to the training of soldiers. In the first part - Watson is Down (2010) - a team of four tank operators performs a virtual mission on a computer simulation. The second part documents military exercises in the real world; with it’s setting of artificial decorations, extras and soldiers – is likened to filming. In either case he is talking about a simulation that creates a mental picture of the real battle, "desensitizing" soldiers before the real war.
The third part of the installation - Immersion (2009) - documents the training of military therapists to work with the simulator for the treatment of psychological trauma, the so-called "war syndrome". Attempts to show the therapeutic process have existed in the past. Thus in 1946, the American director John Huston made a documentary for the US Department of Defense There will be light, which up until the 60s was kept in closed archives. Houston shows the rehabilitation of military after the battle of Pearl Harbor. In Immersion Farocki manages to radicalize and critically rethink Houston’s film. Modern technique uses effect of filmic illusion to immerse the patient in the situation they experienced. The role of the therapist is technical; he/she creates a connection when moving from one memory to another, creating continuity of illusion, whereby the experience of soldiers recalls that of computer game players.
During the development of training scenarios, real case studies of soldiers’ traumatic experiences are being utilized, which then become the basis for a role-play. Farocki leaves the comments of the training therapist within the frame, thereby exposing the method and operating principle of this technique.
The fourth part - A Sun with No Shadow (2010) - Farocki puts previous material under analysis, making it come together. He comments on the most signifying moments, noting that the same images are used in the preparation and in the rehabilitation of the military. The only distinction between the two is that in the latter case, the objects do not cast shadows, because in simulator for psychotherapy US authorities have invested fewer funds.

This work was created for the exhibition Potosí Principle: How Can We Sing the Song of the Lord in an Alien Land? which took place at the Museo Nacional Centro de Reina Sofia in Madrid. Together with a group of artists Farocki explores the origins of a global consumer society, which, according to hypothesis by the exhibition curators, was born in the Bolivian city of Potosi in the XVI century. At that time it was a prosperous city comparable in population size to London. The wealth of the city was due to its affiliation with a "slave triangle" – it being the main principle of the colonial economy, based on the relationship of the three continents. European merchants exchanged African slaves for silver, sugar, rice, and other raw materials and precious metals - and floated back to the Old World.
Farocki chooses a panoramic canvas Description of Cerro Rico and the Imperial municipality of Potosi by painter Gaspar Miguel de Berrio (1758) as a basis for the installation. De Berrio portrays Potosi in an era of colonial conquest, which at the time of the conception of painting was already a historic event over 250 years ago. We see the bustling city life with religious processions, affluent citizens and the latest technological developments in the field of silver mining. Farocki examines in detail the image by de Berrio, but the true object of his attention is in what is left out of the painting, beyond the field of artist’s focus; first of all it is a mass demise of the local population and the slaves in the silver mines, comparable to a genocide of multimillions.
The installation screen is divided into two parts, combining fragments of paintings with actual video images of Potosi. The signs of tragedy are not traced in any of them, just as in the official chronicles. Farocki methodically voiced these events in his commentary, again and again returning to them. This visual range is interrupted by black empty frames as a sign of impossibility of depiction of events as well as restoring historical justice. Farocki gradually leads the viewer to the following questions: On whose behalf the history is written; and how social status and hierarchy affect the right to be represented and be part of it.
