Hello guys,
I'm a freelancer translator for 2 years and just now I've found what a CAT tool is (Yeah, you can laugh at me *shy*).
Well, I'm building up my translation memory and I've faced here in proz.com some glossary things. Searching a little bit more about that I've found out that it's good for small words to be translated directly (correct me if I'm wrong).
Then I've found that there are lots of glossaries here in proz.com...
My question is, is it worth to have SDL MultiTerm? Or is it worth to make a translation memory using SDL Trados with small words also?
Hope you guys have stopped laughing at this point

The CAT jungle is almost impenetrable.
My favorite for dictionaries and glossaries, including own glossaries and own notes about everything under the sun, is WordFinder.

There is of course OmegaT, a cross-platform free CAT software (see http://www.omegat.org) - happy to recommend!
And as the CAT jungle is somewhat impenetrable, there is still some information to be found on good ol' Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT_tool

A want to add that now it supports dictionaries in stardict format, includes interface to GoogleTranslate (which is very helpful in many cases), supports TMX. It is a strong, quality, easy-to-use workplace now. I use this CAT-tool for the vast majority of my projects and happy with it!

A want to add that now it supports dictionaries in stardict format, includes interface to GoogleTranslate (which is very helpful in many cases), supports TMX. It is a strong, quality, easy-to-use workplace now. I use this CAT-tool for the vast majority of my projects and happy with it!

If you're working with Trados already and you know you like it enough to stick with it, I think you just have to get Multiterm. Freeware applications like xbench can do a remarkably good job of handling terminology, but there is no substitute for the sort of integration you get from a same-brand tool.
Essentially, you can feed preexisting or self-made glossaries to multiterm and then it notifies you when a term included in said glossaries occurs in your source segment and lets you paste it with a keyboard shortcut. If you translate material with client-supplied compulsory glossaries or often-repeated terms, or just technical material for which good glossaries are available (which basically means any technical material if you look hard enough), then you should have multiterm.
